"This piece was composed during a period of considerable change and some uncertainty not uncommon to personal reassessments. Sometimes such periods have optimism attached to them, perhaps out of necessity, often with a requisite level of confidence, and then occasionally for perseverance. larkspur, iron filings, when I listen to it, is indeed a reflection of that optimism. While dark and searching, there is a sense of resolve to me in each of the passages, with each that involved pedal steel guitar being fully improvised.

The composing process involved a bed layer of amplifier feedback, shortwave radio transmissions, and frozen dissonant chords from the guitar, over which pedal steel was recorded in real time over the transitioning passages. There was some experimentation with natural filtering — different materials of varying physical composition placed between mic and amplifier — perhaps a subliminal representation of those traversable barriers we encounter during change, some more porous than others?

In thinking about the work for Nicholas and Nomad Exquisite, it occurred to me that my general approach to music and composition has shifted very little over the years. Sonically, eh, musically, I suppose there are large variations in what is actually heard, from sound sources to what I guess could be described as mood. But the structural approach in those private moments of thinking out a new work has a familiar and discreet geometry. It’s within our own creative geometries that the exciting and the unexpected take shape, with boundaries permeable by change."
